Acclaimed American filmmaker Quin Mathews saw President John F. Kennedy just before his assassination. Now, 60 years later, his powerful documentary CITY OF HATE will have its international premiere at The Romford Film Festival on May 23rd at 1:30 pm

CITY OF HATE reveals what Dallas was like 60 years ago when President Kennedy was about to visit the city, told by people who lived there, including the filmmaker, who saw Kennedy shortly before the assassination.

The screening will take place at Lumiere Romford in The Mercury Shopping Centre, followed by a live Q&A session with Quin Mathews. This event offers audience members a unique opportunity to engage with the filmmaker about his documentary and ask questions about his experience.

When we’re young, we look up to heroes, believing we can rise above the labels, the stigmas, and the challenges life throws our way, but reality isn’t always so simple. Not everyone gets the chance to become a Terry Fox or a Rick Hansen. Some people don’t have the opportunity, the support, or the ability to escape the circumstances that hold them down.

Terry and Rick brought awareness to disabilities, showing resilience in the face of hardship, but many who live that reality every day don’t get the same chance to fight their way out. Sometimes, the weight of the world is too much to carry alone.

I hope this story sheds light on that truth and shows that some struggles are bigger than personal willpower. That change isn’t always an individual battle, but a collective one. If we want to be better as a society, we need to lift each other up, and when we help each other like we’re on the same team, we all win.

Wish me luck as I begin my journey with my feature screenplay TONY on the festival circuit. 🏃🏻🇨🇦🧑🏻‍🦽

Having moved from Canada and lived and traveled across many countries abroad, I’ve been struck by how homelessness is universally stigmatised. While movements for LGBTQ+ rights, and racial and gender equality have gained momentum, giving these groups a voice and greater representation in film, homeless individuals (arguably one of the most vulnerable populations) remain largely overlooked.

This story is inspired by my uncle’s life, spanning decades and reflecting how living with a disability in Canada (and the world) has evolved over time. My uncle’s experiences were deeply influenced not only by personal struggles but also by societal attitudes and global events. Despite the fact that people like Terry Fox and Rick Hansen have made important strides in raising disability awareness in Canada, much work remains in 2024.

Born with cerebral palsy, my uncle faced relentless bullying in his youth, and as the years passed, he struggled with homelessness and addiction. His journey compelled me to humanise the homeless and shed light on the depth of their experiences, challenging the often one-dimensional portrayal they receive in the media.

At its core, TONY examines the balance between empathy and self-reliance. When should we extend a helping hand to those in need, and when should individuals find strength within themselves to change their own lives? This exploration is deeply connected to the story’s theme of self-love and how valuing yourself, despite societal judgment, is essential for living a fulfilling life.

TONY is about recognising that everyone, regardless of their circumstances or economic standing, deserves compassion and love. In a world where many people are just one paycheck away from homelessness, and where traumatic events can often lead to this reality, my hope is that TONY will inspire audiences to challenge stigmas, nurture empathy, and approach others with greater compassion and understanding.

I had such a great time this weekend at the @beestonfilmfestival as a jury member and representing @rebekahfilmdr and our films. It was such a positive experience to connect with filmmakers and see such a strong body of shorts from around the world. Special thanks to @johncurrie25 who allowed me to be a part of this special night and present The Best Comedy Award.

Two weeks ago I walked up the Stairway to Heaven, a 15 km trail in Co. Fermanagh. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone. Ireland will always have a special place in my heart.

It was sunny and I was smiling because the night before I found an “all you can eat buffet”. I slept well as one only would after getting their euros worth. After a breakfast of espressos and Portuguese French toast, @melaniedelizabeth took my picture and then encouraged me face my fears. We slowly walked to the top of the hill, zigging our way back and forth to the bridge above. I stumbled across the bridge as fast as I could. The tram driving past me shook the see through panels underneath my timid feed; and the tourists bumping into me as they took photos of the view didn’t help either. I nearly cried… But it was sunny and I was in Porto, and there was a pastel de nata waiting for me on the other side.
